Mayflies in June...
June bugs in July...
Summer swelters in a sultry sky.
August is coming
Followed quickly by September
Warm days will fade
becoming hard to remember.
Our Golden October has faded to soggy fall. I was invited to share dinner with friends one late summer evening. The weather was perfect. Bugs flitted in the golden rays of the setting sun. I watched this Golden Light make it's way down the street, shadows growing longer as the bugs continued to dance in the light like tiny fairies, following as it went. Chasing the daylight. I wanted to follow them but I knew eventually I would be left behind so I just stared into the light, taking it all in. A few days later, I stepped out on the front porch after day of work indoors. The sun was bright white and bugs of every kind flew here and there and of course everywhere, even colliding into me! I thought "Yech! Too bright! Too bright!" and suddenly my thought stopped as I remembered the Golden Light. I smiled, squinted my eyes and sat on my front stoop, allowing the bugs to bump into me as the flew around. I smiled because I realized, in that moment, I was ahead of the Golden Light, surrounded by fairies, and felt glad for the last fleeting days of summer. |
